I've been wanting to utilize this blog space as a place to publish free patterns and today is the day I publish the first one! I give you....the Bloom Can Cozy!
There are tons of sunburst/sunflower granny square patterns out there, but this is my favorite AND it works up to the perfect size for a can cozy. This pattern will always be available for free here, but I will also have a paid PDF version with detailed photos, video, and tips for color changes on my website and on Etsy if you prefer to have that.
Bloom Can Cozy Pattern
This pattern has instructions for both a cozy with a bottom and a sleeve. Since the modifications are minor, the pattern is written as one with the modifications for the sleeve in parentheses and bolded.
Supplies needed:
4mm (4.5mm) crochet hook
Worsted weight cotton yarn (I used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton! Yarn)
Tapestry needle
This pattern is made up of two sunburst granny squares that are then crocheted into a rectangle and joined using a continuous join as you go method. Each sunburst should be approximately 3.5" (3.75") across the center before joining. Each square should be approximately 4" (4.25") after joining. You may need to adjust your hook size or tension in order to avoid having a saggy can cozy.
Stitches and abbreviations used:
blo - back loop only
ch - chain
CL - cluster st - *yarn over, insert hook into st, pull through, yarn over and pull through two loops, repeat from * three more times, yarn over and pull through all five loops on hook. You may also see this written in other patterns as a 4x dc
dc - double crochet
hdc - half double crochet
hdc dec - crochet two hdc together using an invisible decrease
invisible dec - yarn over, insert hook into front loops of the next two st, pull through, yarn over and pull through three loops
modified hdc - yarn over, insert hook into blo of next st, pull through, insert hook into next ch 1 sp, pull through, yarn over, pull yarn through all four loops on hook
3x puff st - yarn over, insert hook into st, pull through, yarn over, insert hook into same st, pull through, yarn over, insert into same st, pull through, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 to secure
4x puff st - same as above, but repeat until there are 9 loops on the hook, pull through all 9 loops, ch 1 to secure
sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
sp - space(s)
st - stitch
standing dc - before inserting hook into st, yarn over twice, insert hook into st, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, pull through two.
Sunbursts (make 2)
Change colors after each round if desired!
Using your 4mm (4.5mm) hook, ch 5, sl st into first ch to create a circle, ch 2
Round 1: dc 16 into circle, sl st to top of first dc, ch 1 (16)
Round 2: 3x (4x) puff st into each dc, sl st into the ch 1 space after the first puff st of the round, ch 2 (16 puffs, 16 ch)
Round 3: CL in same ch 1 space as the join, *ch 2, CL in next ch 1 space, repeat from * around, sl st into first ch 2 space (16 clusters, 16 ch 2 spaces). First sunburst - finish off.
Repeat to make the second granny sunburst, but do not finish off the second one unless changing colors.
Joining the Sunbursts Using Continuous-Join-As-You-Go
From here on out, first sunburst refers to the first sunburst made, and second sunburst refers to second sunburst made.
Side 1: Continuing on (or joining new yarn if you changed color) the second sunburst, {ch 3, 3 dc} in same ch 2 sp. In the next three ch 2 sp *3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc* then {3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc} in next ch 2 sp (corner made).
Side 2a: Repeat * to * from Side 1 once more, then {3 dc, ch 1} in next ch 2 sp.
Here's where it gets good! What we are essentially doing is "snaking" around the sunbursts creating the edges that make them square and joining them simultaneously.
Side 2b: Pick up your first sunburst and hold it with the second one behind the first one with wrong sides together.
Work a standing dc into any ch 2 sp on your first sunburst, then sl st into the top of the last dc you worked on your second sunburst, inserting your hook from back to front (see photo). This will join the sunbursts together and begin the join-as-you-go. Work a second dc into the same sp and then sl st into the top of the coordinating dc across from the st you just worked. Work a third dc into the same sp and sl st into the space between the dc and hdc clusters on your second sunburst.
Continue in the same fashion, working 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc into the next four ch 2 sp, and joining to the second sunburst with a sl st, placing the third sl st of each cluster in the space between the clusters on the second sunburst.
We are now going to work into just the first sunburst.
Sides 3 & 4: *Ch 1 and turn your work 90º clockwise.
3dc in same ch 2 sp (corner made), 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc in next four ch 2 sp. Repeat from * for Side 4.
Next we'll work along what will be the top edge of your cozy.
Side 5: Ch 1, 3 dc in same sp (corner made), 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc in next three ch 2 sp.
Work 3 dc in next ch 2 sp (there are already 3 dc here), ch 1, sl st into ch 1 "bump" at the seam (photo), ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp (there are already 3 dc here), 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc in next four ch 2 sp.
Final Seam: Fold the piece wrong sides together and match up the sunbursts.
Ch 1, sl st into ch 1 corner sp on second sunburst, then using the CJAYG method from Side 2b, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc in next three ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp (there are already 3 dc here), and place the last joining sl st in the ch 1 corner sp and ch 1.
Do not finish off, but you can do a happy dance because you just CJAYG!
Finishing
Work your first st of every round into the same st as your joining sl st.
Cup Cozy
Round 1: Ch 1, blo hdc in the same st and in the next 13 st, modified hdc in next st, blo hdc in next 14 st, modified hdc in next st, sl st to top of first hdc, ch 1 (30).
Round 2: hdc in same st as join, hdc dec in next st, *hdc, hdc dec*, repeat from * to * around, sl st to top of first hdc, ch 1 (20).
Round 3: hdc dec in same st as join, hdc dec around, sl st into first hdc, finish off (10). Use a tapestry needle and your end to pick up the front loop of each stitch of the last round and pull tight to close the center. Weave in your ends.
The finished cozy should fit standard 12oz cups and cans (not skinny cans).
Sleeve
Round 1: with your 4.5mm hook, LOOSELY BLO sl st in each st around, working a sl st into each ch 1 sp at the corners, join to first sl st. Don't forget to sl st into the corner right before your joining sl st! (34)
If your sl st are too tight, you might need to size up to a 5mm hook.
Round 2: ch 1, BLO sl st in each st around, join to first sl st, finish off (34)
The finished sleeve should fit 16-20-32 oz cups.
Happy sipping!!
If you need more visual help with the CJAYG, I have recorded a tutorial on YouTube that shows exactly how I do it! The link is available in the purchased PDF of this pattern which is available under "Patterns" on my website, and also on Etsy. I also give some tips on how I like to change colors for my sunbursts!
As usual, you are welcome and encouraged to make these to sell in your shops, but please credit @bobblesandblooms with the design. You may not reproduce, redistribute, or sell this pattern as your own. I would love love love to see what you make, so please tag me on instagram with your makes!

Hello I just recently saw the bloom can cozy pattern and I went to you blog to get it for free. I am having a hard time joining the two squares as I go based on the directions. Any tips?
